Back in primary and secondary school our teachers worked hard to teach us that it is not nice to copy someone else’s work without giving proper credit. In other words, don’t plagiarize! In university we learned that we had to include citations to the work we quoted from.

So now that your blogging, there is a similar term for giving reference to someone else’s work, trackback and pingback or simply pinging. Basically both are a way of saying, “Here is my citation and works cited for this post.” The difference between the two? Trackback is the manual way and Pinging is Automatic.

So how do you use trackback and pingback in Wordpress 2 ?

Pinging in Wordpress is EASY. All you have to do is include a link to the article. Here is an example.

So in this above example all I did is link to the article using the insert link button on the toolbar. Put in the permalink of the post and voila! I pinged that aritcle.

If the author of that post happened to allow pings (which most posts do allow) then you would see something like this below it:

To make sure you have allowed pings for your original post look on the right-hand column of Wordpress and you’ll see a Discussion Tab. Expand it so it looks like this and then make sure allow pings is selected.

Trackback:

The best way to trackback is to look for a Trackback link in the post you are citing. It will typically look something like, “trackback this article” When you find that link, then copy the link and paste it into the “trackback” form on your Wordpress post page. Notice the links ends with “trackback

Hopefully this has helped clarify pingback and trackbacks. Love to hear your comments.
